Can you handle all of this in one shift?

  • Patiently assisting someone with creating an ID.me account,
  • Calming a frazzled mom trying to print 20 pictures for their child’s posterboard,
  • Finding books on travel to the Canary Islands,
  • Setting up and presenting a program on how to download audiobooks,
  • Figuring out why the copy machine won’t take dollar bills,
  • AND…are still speaking pleasantly to coworkers and patrons alike and haven’t tossed any devices against a wall.

If this type of day leaves you with a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment, or at least with your sanity intact, then you might be well-suited for our Reference Assistant position!

The Crete Public Library invites applications from dynamic individuals who have a passion for libraries and the people who use them and who can embrace non-traditional roles for “librarians of the future.” Applicants must pride themselves on providing gracious, friendly, and responsive service to the community. Join our enthusiastic, patron-focused staff at a beautiful facility in this pleasant south suburban community (population served 18,000).

Job Description: The Reference Assistant provides friendly, knowledgeable, and patient service to patrons at the Information Desk. This role requires strong multitasking skills, adaptability, and the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.

This position’s main job responsibilities are to regularly provide basic reference and reader’s advisory services at our Information Desk, process daily interlibrary loans, assist patrons with various forms of technology, and occasionally present programs, among “other duties as assigned.”

Hours: Part-time, non-exempt (16 hours/week). Generally, three days/week, including two night/week and two Saturdays/month. Some scheduling flexibility.

If you are interested in this position but aren’t sure you can meet the hour requirements, we encourage you to still consider applying. We may have some flexibility in hours, and your skills and availability may make you a great candidate. We would consider candidates who are looking for evening/weekend hours exclusively, as well.

Requirements: LTA with 2 years of work experience in a library, or bachelor’s degree with 2 years of experience working with the public with an emphasis on customer service. Library experience preferred. Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Possess a valid driver’s license and/or access to reliable transportation.
