Youth Services Supervisor

Join our enthusiastic, patron-focused staff in a beautiful facility, in this pleasant south suburban community (population served 18,000).

Job Description: This staff member is part of the eight person Youth Services Department and provides the best practices of reference service and reader’s advisory. Additional responsibilities include assisting with planning, scheduling, booking, and evaluation of performers and events, designing and implementing school-age and tween programming, assistance with collection maintenance, preparation of usage reports, distributing and communicating information to other Youth Services staff, modeling best practices in customer services and marketing, and takes a critical role in promoting youth services events and services. This staff member will also monitor changes and trends in library services and popular culture, and incorporate those trends into our services when appropriate while providing recommendations for improvements that will increase the department’s efficiency and effectiveness.

Hours: Full-time, non-exempt (37.5 hours/week), with an ability to be flexible working multiple mornings, evening, and weekend shifts based on department needs.

Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field, and at least 3 years working in a public library in a Youth Services Department. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, the public, and trustees, and have a proficient ability to empathize and relate to the needs of all patrons, especially children, and their caregivers. Ability to remain calm and effective in difficult situations while exercising reasonable, independent judgment and discretion is highly desired. Must have an ability to adapt to emerging technologies. A broad knowledge of and proficiency with current and emerging technologies/software and library practices, procedures, and materials is required. Ability to manage time, prioritize multiple tasks, and coordinate activities with members of the Youth Services Department. Ideal candidates will have a commitment to intellectual freedom and intellectual curiosity and be energetic, resourceful, tactful, and good-humored.

Salary: $20.53/hr. DOQ

Youth Service Clerk

Job Description: This staff member is part of a 8-person Youth Services Department that will be regularly working the Youth Services Information Desk by providing basic reference services and reader’s advisory. Duties include aiding Youth Services Assistants with programming, assisting with the creation of bulletin boards, displays, booklists, shelving and maintaining library materials, and positively promoting services and programs offered by the library.

Hours: Part-time, non-exempt (16 hours/week), with an ability to be flexible. This individual will be working multiple evening and weekend shifts, based on department needs. Tentative schedule includes Wednesday & Thursday evenings, and Saturdays.

Requirements: High School Diploma with at least two years experience working with children. Some college course work or LTA preferred. Excellent people skills is a must, as is a high tolerance when assisting the public. Knowledge and experience with various forms of technology is required, as is the ability to assist patrons with use. Ideal candidate will have a dedication to intellectual freedom and intellectual curiosity and be energetic, resourceful, tactful, and good-humored.

Salary:  $15/hr DOQ
