Borrow, Renew & Late Fees

Browse, Borrow or Renew
You may browse our catalog online at any time without logging in. To view your account information, download electronic items, renew items or pay late fees, you will need to login to your account.

To login, click the “Search Catalog” link from the home page. Next, select My Account on the upper right portion of the page. Type in your 14 digit library barcode (found on your library card) without any spaces, and enter your PIN. If you don’t know your PIN, follow the online prompts or call the library at (708) 672-8017.

You can search the catalog by title, keyword, author and/or other options. Use the search criteria on the left side of the page to narrow your search. If you need assistance or would like to learn more about searching the catalog, stop by and speak to one of our librarians at the Information desk.

Request an Item (Also Known as “Place Hold”)
When you see your search results, there are some important things to know. Under the title, you’ll see “Holds” and “Copies”. This will tell you the number of copies in the SWAN system, and if any holds have been placed on the title. By clicking on the title, you can learn more about the item, see what libraries carry the item, and whether the item is available. When you’ve found an item you’d like to check out, simply click the “Place Hold” option (you’ll need to login to place a hold). The item will be held for you at the Crete Library (unless you select a different pick-up location).

How Long May I Keep Checked Out Items?
DVDs: 7 days
Magazines: 7 days
TV Shows: 14 days
Books and all other materials: 14 days (including eBooks and audio books)

Renewing an Item
You can renew items by logging in to your account and clicking “My Account“. You will see a list of items you have checked out under “Checked Out”. To renew an item, simply click on the box next to the title and select “Renew” on the bottom or top of the screen.  Items may also be renewed in person or by phone at (708) 672-8017.

If you are unable to select an item, you will see a message informing you that you’ve either reached your renewal limit, or that the item cannot be renewed. Most items can be renewed as long as they haven’t been requested by another patron. Items may not be renewed by patrons with late fees exceeding $5.00.

Late Return Fees
DVDs:  $1.00 per day
All other materials: $0.10 per day

To pay late fees online, you may use MasterCard, Visa or Discover credit cards. The system does not accept debit cards.

To pay your late fees online:

  1. Log into “My Account” from the Crete Catalog.
  2. Enter your barcode number and your pin.
  3. Click My Account in the upper right.
  4. Click “Fines”
  5. You will see all fees related to your account. Select the listed items you want to pay by checking the boxes.
  6. Click on “Pay Library Via Credit Card”
  7. Enter your billing information, including credit card information, and email address for an emailed receipt.
  8. Click “Submit” and follow the directions to complete the transaction.
  9. A payment receipt will display for your records.

You may also pay your late fees in person at the library. Only cash is accepted at the library.

Lost or Damaged Materials
For any lost or damaged items, you will be charged the cost of the item, plus a $5 processing fee.
