Young Adult
Services
The Young Adult Services
Department at the Crete Public Library has recently brought more popular and contemporary materials to the young
adult fiction and non-fiction collections, including programming
that appeals to young adults. |

The YA area of the library
occupies a quiet corner on the first floor at the back of the building
with comfortable chairs, a couple of tables, and windows overlooking the
wooded area behind the library. Teens are welcome to sit and read, play
games with friends, do homework in this area.
The non-fiction collection
includes many titles relevant to topics of interests to teens today,
either for school papers or personal interest, such as environmental
concerns, forensic science, health, drugs, and popular series such as
Opposing Viewpoints and At Issue.
For those who prefer fiction
titles, there is a small paperback collection, as well as a larger
hardcover collection. Just a few of the popular authors, titles, and/or
series currently in the YA area include Christopher Paolini’s
Inheritance series, Jonathan Stroud’s Bartimaeus Trilogy, Ann Brashares
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, Meg Cabot, Chris Crutcher,
Paul Zindel, Gossip Girls, The Nine Lives of Chloe King, and, of course,
the Harry Potter series.
There is also a growing
collection of graphic novels, including such series as Full Metal
Alchemist, Fruits Basket, and Inu Yasha, among others. The library also
subscribes to Shonen Jump magazine.
In addition, the YA area
includes Seventeen and other magazines and a handful of DVD’s of
interest to teens, such as the Lizzie McGuire Movie, Kicking and
Screaming, and several anime films.
Programs
In the last couple of years, the
library has increased its program offerings to young adults.
Most popular have been the monthly Game Parties, where teens bring their
Xbox, PlayStations, or other video games, and hook them up to the large
screen projector in the library’s large meeting room. They even get a
kick out of playing some old Nintendo games, like Duck Hunt or Mario
Brothers, on a regular television while waiting their turn for a shot at
the “big screen.” Refreshments and treats are usually served.
Other programs have included
Anime Film Fests, a Pants Decorating Party (celebrating the movie
release of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) and a Makeover Party.
If you have any ideas for a YA program, or would like to help organize a
Teen Advisory Board, please contact the library.
