 Adult Services

The Adult Services Department occupies the main part of the first floor of the library and includes the fiction and non-fiction book collections, as well as audiobooks on tape and CD, non-fiction videos and DVDs, and periodicals. The library is also home to several special collections, including an extensive Antiques and Collectibles Collection, the Caregivers’ Collection, and the Millennium Movie DVD Collection.

In the Adult Services area, you can find the dedicated Reference staff, plenty of tables at which you can work, our computer terminals (for Internet, online card catalog, and online database access and Microsoft Office software programs) and access to the library’s Wi-Fi. Plus, there is a comfortable reading area in front of the library’s two-story fireplace with windows overlooking the wooded area and creek behind the library. Walking paths were recently cleared through the woods by a local Eagle Scout, and frequently, deer can be seen in the woods and in the field to the north of the library.

Book Collections

The library has over 70,000 books in the fiction and non-fiction collections, with new books arriving weekly. In addition to the regular fiction and non-fiction sections, the library has mystery, science fiction/fantasy, western, classics, and paperback sections. A New Books area showcases the newest titles at the library. They are shelved inside and to the left of the double doors as you enter the Adult Services area. Finally, the reference collection includes more the 2,700 volumes of encyclopedias, atlases, dictionaries, local history books, biographical information, and much more. Reference materials are for in-library use only.

The Antiques and Collectibles Collection began as a specialized collection development project with the Metropolitan Library System and an LSTA cooperative grant. The collection is a unique and extensive assortment of materials related to antiques and collectibles, such as books, periodicals, and videos, which have circulated all over the country. The collection continues to be maintained with the generous assistance of the Crete Library Foundation. Recently, over $1500 in new titles were purchased and are on display in the adult services area.

The Crete Public Library is a Satellite Caregiver Resource Center for Will County. This collection has been developed under the auspices of a Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging Grant Project. The Caregiver Collection provides resource materials, such as books, videos, and pamphlets, as well as consumer and community information, referral, and assistance for caregivers, families, and friends. For example, the collection includes the Video Respite Series,  videos that were designed the entertain Alzheimer’s patients and give their caregivers a break. Books include everything from dealing with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease to finding resources in your community or dealing with the daily stress of being a caregiver.

 Audiobooks

More than 1,000 fiction and non-fiction titles are available at the library as audiobooks in either cassette or CD format for those who prefer to listen to a good book. Some titles include the complete (unabridged) text of the original book, while others are abridged, or shortened. Non-fiction titles are interfiled with the books in the non-fiction section, while fiction audiobooks have their own section. The library also has a leasing program for  audiobooks (both cassette and CD) that rotates quarterly, so there is always a selection of the newest titles available to patrons.
